We are delighted to report the successful defence by Ms. Samin Bakhtawar for her thesis "Risk factors for sepsis among postpartum women admitted to tertiary care hospital Karachi, Pakistan: A nested case control study". Samina has earned a MSc in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Aga Khan University for completion of this project, supervised by PRE-EMPT members: Dr. Sana Sheikh, Dr. Rahat Qureshi, Dr. Zahra Hoodbhoy and Dr. Beth Payne with additional supervision from AKU faculty member Mr. Iqbal Azam. Samina's primary finding was that a simple model based on demographic risk factors and clinical sign and symptoms shows promise to diagnose sepsis after delivery. This model demonstrated adequate performance in terms of discrimination among women with and without sepsis and has potential to be scaled up for community use by frontline health care workers after validation. Congratulations Samina!
